Are you looking for ways to give back to the community? If so, we have a spot for you! We’re looking for committed residents willing to volunteer a few hours of their time each month to serve on a board or commission.
Rowlett citizens are encouraged to participate in their municipal government through service on various City boards and commissions. These volunteer boards are composed of citizens who are appointed by the City Council. Most positions are appointed for terms ranging from one to two years. Other appointments are made as necessary to fill vacancies or when new boards are created.
City Council makes their annual appointments at the end of September for terms to begin October 1st. To be eligible for these appointments, applications will be accepted beginning June 1 with a deadline of August 14 each year. PLEASE NOTE: Applications received AFTER the deadline will be kept on file through May 30 in case of mid-year vacancies. Interviews for 2023 will be held on or before Saturday, August 26, 2023. Applicants will be notified by staff for specific times.
Online application or you may obtain a paper form via email or in the City Secretary’s Office in the City Hall Municipal Center at 4000 Main Street. Youth members who wish to apply for advisory Boards and/or Commissions will be appointed as Junior Alternate Members and may participate as non-voting members. Youth applicants must be Rowlett citizens in the ninth, tenth, eleventh or twelfth grade. Junior Alternate Member applications (PDF) must be completed, printed and notarized. Completed applications can be dropped off at the City Secretary’s Office, faxed to 972-412-6118 or emailed to the City Secretary’s Office.
For currently seated Board/Commission members wishing to be reappointed, please complete the Reappointment Application beginning May 1 with a deadline of May 31. If you are not seeking to be reappointed to your current seat, but would like to be considered for a different Board/Commission, please fill out the application referenced above.
The Boards and Commissions attendance policy is clearly stated in the handbook (PDF) under Section 3.1.
All appointed and reappointed members of a board or commission shall complete mandatory Open Meetings Act training within 45 days of their appointment or reappointment to comply with the Open Meetings Act. Online training may be completed by watching the Texas Attorney General’s Open Meetings Act Video, or a DVD may be checked out from the City Secretary’s Office.
Agenda and minutes of past meetings of many of the boards are available by clicking below on a board or commission link.
Many archived documents are now available via this website. Agendas, minutes, resolutions, ordinances, packets and election results dating from 1952 to the present (following City Council approval) are located in Laserfiche, a document imaging program used by the City for archived records.
